The Better Way to Pray

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
—Matthew 6:5-6

I’m noticing a trend in just these few verses I have started writing about. It’s all about you and God. It’s not about anyone else knowing your business with how much you are giving to the poor or what kind of prayers you are praying. It’s all about your relationship with the Lord and keeping your focus on Him.

There was a Christian drama that came out in 2015 called War Room, I highly recommend that you watch it sometime. It’s all about having a “prayer room” as a spiritual battleground. We could all benefit from creating a sacred time and space to have our own private prayers with God. The Greek word “room” was used for a storeroom where treasures are kept. This reminds us that there are treasures waiting for us in our prayer closet.

When we pray, our focus should be directed towards God and not towards men. Once again, a friendly reminder, it’s all about Him.

Prayer

Loving God, help us to pray the way You would have us to pray. Help us to lift our praises, our concerns, and our deepest heartaches to You oh Lord. Help our prayer life to be all about You and not about or for anyone else. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
