TEMPORARY WORLD

Psalm 49:10,20

10 When we look at the wise, they die;
  fool and dolt perish together
  and leave their wealth to others.

20 Mortals cannot abide in their pomp;
  they are like the animals that perish.

One of my favorite quotes is from John Wesley reminding us of what we are to do with ourselves while in this earthly world, “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.” While we are still alive in this world, we are called to live in the now and spend our time and energy on the things that matter. The wisdom in this text for today tells us that wise people know that our earthly time in limited and therefore we need to make the most of it. If we hold onto our own glory, it is a foolish path that does not sustain us.

God calls us to live in the now of this earthly world. For we know that this world is not where glory lies, but instead glory lies beyond this world thanks to Jesus. So, while we are here, we should use our talents, gifts and energies in support of one another and furthering God’s kingdom here and now. How can use your gifts to help and support others? How can you show God’s love even in small ways?

Prayer

Amazing God of love, you have given us this temporary stay on this earth. Help is to make the most of our time here by loving ourselves and loving our neighbors. Help us to seek out the lost and lonely, support those in need, and act in love toward all who cross our paths. In your name, Amen.
