Acts 1:8
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.
Between now and Pentecost in June, we will be spending our devotional time exploring the Holy Spirit. As with the Spirit itself, there is a lot of mystery about how the Holy Spirit works in and through our lives. We often have a lot of questions and there are many references in our Bible that help paint a picture for us.
In our Acts text for today, Jesus has returned to spend some time with the apostles and give them three important promises for now and the future. One of these promises is the gift of the Holy Spirit. As the apostles began asking questions about God’s plan and what the future has in store for the world, Jesus provided a reminder about the constant presence and power of the Holy Spirit. While there is no timeline about how life will unfold, Jesus provides comfort that God is always with them through this power.
Have you ever wanted to know whether or not God has a plan? Or wanted or prayed that something would happen in your time? You are not alone. The disciples wanted these same answers validating our feelings that it is difficult to live in uncertainty about the world. We want to know and it is hard to wait and wonder. Jesus reminds us that we are never alone and that our power in waiting in this world comes through the presence of the Holy Spirit. While the Spirit is not guaranteed to provide answers, we learn through this Acts text that there is power in feeling that connection to God which is inseparable. In a world that often feels powerless, we can feel powerful knowing that God’s Spirit provides a constant tether of love that is never disconnected.
Prayer
God of Love, we thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit. As we bask in the joy of Easter and the celebration of our risen Lord, we continue in joy because we remain connected to you through the Spirit. Help us to feel your constant presence in our lives and take comfort in this gift to help keep us going in this world. In your name, Amen.
Beautiful reminder! Thank you.
