PSALMS

Most of us have come to know the Psalms as “the songbook of ancient Israel.”  This collection of 150 psalms, songs, and poems, runs the gambit of human emotion. The psalms echo the faith expressions of David and other children of God. Reading the psalms devotionally can truly give voice to our own souls. (And reading through the Psalms can be a long but productive endeavor.)

Psalm 1:1-3

Happy are those
who do not follow the advice of the wicked
or take the path that sinners tread
or sit in the seat of scoffers,
but their delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law they meditate day and night.
They are like trees
planted by streams of water,
which yield their fruit in its season,
and their leaves do not wither.
In all that they do, they prosper.

Psalm 150:1-6

Praise the Lord!
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty firmament![
a]
Praise him for his mighty deeds;
praise him according to his surpassing greatness!

Praise him with trumpet sound;
praise him with lute and harp!
Praise him with tambourine and dance;
praise him with strings and pipe!
Praise him with clanging cymbals;
praise him with loud clashing cymbals!
Let everything that breathes praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord!

Prayer

Gracious God, from beginning to end, let me will this day with praise to you, so that I might yield the fruit you offer. Amen.
