Assurance of God’s Protection
1 You who live in the shelter of the Most High,
who abide in the shadow of the Almighty,
2 will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress;
my God, in whom I trust.”
3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the hunter
and from the deadly pestilence;
4 he will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness is a shield and defense.
5 You will not fear the terror of the night
or the arrow that flies by day
6 or the pestilence that stalks in darkness
or the destruction that wastes at noonday.
The psalms were the hymnbook of ancient Isarel. And some of the psalms have found their way into our hymnal and worship life. That’s the way it is with Psalm 91.
Hymn 43 in our Glory to God Hymnal is called “On Eagle’s Wings”. Since coming to our tradition from the Roman Catholic Church in the 1970’s, Presbyterian Christians (and others) have found strength and comfort in how God’s protection is presented in this song/psalm.
If you can’t remember how it sounded being sung in our church, you might want to listen to these words set to music:
Prayer
God, I praise you for delivering me from the snares, the terror, the arrows of life. Thank you for being my refuge and strength. Amen.
