PSALM 70

DELIVERANCE

To the leader. Of David, for the memorial offering.

Be pleased, O God, to deliver me.
O Lord, make haste to help me!
Let those be put to shame and confusion
who seek my life.
Let those be turned back and brought to dishonor
who desire to hurt me.
Let those who say, “Aha, Aha!”
turn back because of their shame.

Let all who seek you
rejoice and be glad in you.
Let those who love your salvation
say evermore, “God is great!”
But I am poor and needy;
hasten to me, O God!
You are my help and my deliverer;
O Lord, do not delay!

I wonder what David meant when he called our God “his help and deliverer”.

I wonder what was going on in David’s life as he needed help and deliverance.
(Was David trying to save a sheep from a wolf.)

Was he getting ready to do battle with a Philistine giant?

Was he fleeing from a deranged King Saul who was trying to kill him?

Was he feeling the deep guilt of his own acts of adultery and murder?

Whatever the situation – these were his words:

But I am poor and needy;
hasten to me, O God!
You are my help and my deliverer;
O Lord, do not delay!

Only I know what is happening in my life where I am needed deliverance. And God is listening.

Prayer

Wonderful God,  I am poor and needy; hasten to me. You are my help and my deliverer;
O Lord, do not delay!  Amen.
