PSALM 18:1-3

I love you, O Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer,
my God, my rock in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised,
so I shall be saved from my enemies.

The Psalms, as recorded in the Bible, are interesting songs. Some come to us as they are. Other psalms are given to us with an introduction or musical instructions. Psalm is preceded with this text:

Royal Thanksgiving for Victory

To the leader. A Psalm of David the servant of the Lord, who addressed the words of this song to the Lord on the day when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. He said:

The words “I love you, O Lord, my strength” … take on extra meaning when you know the who/why/when of the song. David had been pursued by some mighty enemies, including King Saul. His life had truly been in danger. And when this servant of the Lord was delivered from those threatening hands, he thanked God for the victory.

As you think of the struggles in your life, these words may fit on your lips.

Prayer

God, you are the rock in whom I take refuge. Thank you for being my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call upon You, as You are worthy to be praised. Amen.
