The editors of the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible have added a heading to Proverbs chapter 2:
The Value of Wisdom
Listen to how Solomon quantifies what we can receive as “wisdom comes into our hearts:
Proverbs 2:10-15
and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul;
11 prudence will watch over you,
and understanding will guard you.
12 It will save you from the way of evil,
from those who speak perversely,
13 who forsake the paths of uprightness
to walk in the ways of darkness,
14 who rejoice in doing evil
and delight in the perverseness of evil,
15 those whose paths are crooked
and who are devious in their ways.
In a very practical and transactional sense, we might ask what we get from listening to and acquiring wisdom.
- KNOWLEDGE will be pleasant to our souls
- PRUDENCE will watch over us
- UNDERSTANDING will guard us
Those are three pretty special dividends from reading and learning the wisdom in God’s word.

God of good gifts, let me immerse myself daily in your word, so that I might be wise with knowledge, prudence, and understanding. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
