Our Father in Heaven

Jesus reframes how we pray by helping us understand that God is both our Lord and Father. He’s huge and eternal and personal: family and God.

Prayer isn’t just something we do, it’s a relationship we live. When Jesus taught his disciples to pray, he began with the words, “Our Father in heaven.” Those words are simple, but they completely reframe how we approach God. In them, Jesus reminds us that God is both Lord and Father. He’s the all-powerful creator of the universe, huge, eternal, and holy. Yet at the same time, he’s near, loving, and personal. He’s not just the Lord out there, he’s our Father right here.

That balance changes the way we pray. We don’t have to come to God with polished words or perfect behavior. We come as children—honest, dependent, sometimes messy, but always welcome. And yet, we also come with reverence, remembering that the one we call Father is the same God who spoke the stars into being.

When life feels overwhelming, remember that God brings peace. He’s strong enough to handle what feels impossible and loving enough to walk with you through it. Every prayer, no matter how small, reaches the heart of God.

So when you pray, take a deep breath and remember: You’re speaking with someone who knows you completely and loves you endlessly. God is both family and God. He is mighty, merciful, and always near.

Prayer

God, thank you for being both great and close. Help us to pray with trust, honesty, and love. Amen.
