Millie and the Mustard Seed

For the Lenten season, our staff will focus on the places and spaces in our lives in a devotion series entitled “Where We See God.”  Each day a different staff member will share a snapped photo of an image where they have felt God and a reflection its meaning to them.  We are hoping that it opens your eyes to see all the places, big and small, where God is ever present in your life and the world.

He put before them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”
—Matthew 13:31-32

This is the paw my dog Millie.  I snapped this photo a while back and it is one of my favorites.  I love that she has a little paw print much like we each have a unique finger print.  I love the fur that sticks out between her toes.  If this was shown to you far away, you might not even be able to tell that it is paw at all but rather just a mess of something.

The smallness of this image, much like the mustard seed, reminds me that God is in everything from the biggest of big to the smallest of small.  The joy that emanates from this dog has brought joy to myself and my whole family. She keeps us laughing and reminds us of love every day.  Opening our eyes we can see through each day the way that God is in all, with all, and for all.

Prayer

God of everything, we thank you for the ways that you are present in our lives from the grains of sand to the whirling planets. Open our eyes to see your hand in all that we do and in who we are. Amen.
