Devotional Thoughts Based on the Glory to God Hymnal
Ezekiel 37:5-6
Thus says the Lord God to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the Lord.
In our text for today the prophet Ezekiel is given a vision of a valley of dry bones. The Lord speaks – calling for sinews, flesh and skin to cover them. The bones are no longer bare, but they are not yet living human beings. For these bones to live, they need the breath of life. The Spirit (breath or wind) is essential for life. The refrain of the hymn, Like the Murmur of the Dove’s Song, pleads for the coming of the Spirit – for without it, these bones covered with sinews, flesh and skin still will not become living bodies. So, Come Holy Spirit, Come.
