IT’S NOT ABOUT US

Every time I read one of Ann Voskamp’s quotes, I find myself saying – ohhhhhh wow! She takes such simple thoughts and makes them really resonate with your heart. I also immediately thought of one person in particular when I read this quote. Dr. Claude Alan Harvey who faithfully served First Presbyterian Church as our Associate Pastor for over 20 years.

During his time at First Presbyterian Church, I had the opportunity to be his co-worker for 10 years. He was relatively quiet and shy, not making a lot of fuss everywhere he went. You might find him in the kitchen preparing for one of his Book Club events, over in the CE building creating some type of artwork for Bright Sunday, helping to host Saturday Nite Live, or visiting with a family member upon the loss of a loved one. Alan didn’t make it all about him, it was all about God. He left little marks of God’s love everywhere he went. You might have even been blessed enough to receive a beautifully hand-written note from him, thanking you for your faithful service to First Presbyterian Church or sending you a lovely birthday card in the mail. He always seemed to remember special dates and would often check in with others as those dates approached. He left God marks everywhere he went and because of his faithful leadership at First Presbyterian Church, those of us who were able to know him personally, are better Christ followers thanks to him.

Prayer

Father God, help us to leave Your mark everywhere we go in life. Help us not to make life all about us, but instead make it all about YOU, shining Your light everywhere we go. Amen
