I CHRONICLES

The combined book of I and II Chronicles formed the conclusion to the original Hebrew scriptures. Chronicles is a recap, or sorts, telling the story of Israel from the creation of the world down to the beginnings of the Persian Empire. I Chronicles summarizes the timeline from Adam to King Saul, and then deals extensively with David’s reign.

I Chronicles 11:1-3

11 Then all Israel gathered together to David at Hebron and said, “Look, we are your bone and flesh. For some time now, even while Saul was king, it was you who commanded the army of Israel. The Lord your God said to you, ‘It is you who shall be shepherd of my people Israel, you who shall be ruler over my people Israel.’ ” So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the Lord. And they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the Lord by Samuel.

Prayer

Let me study the stories of all who have shepherded your people through the years, so that I might truly follow the Good Shepherd, God in human flesh, my Lord and Savior Jesus, in whose name I pray. Amen.
