HYMN 712: AS THOSE OF OLD THEIR FIRSTFRUITS BROUGHT

The words were written by Frank Von Christierson in 1960. In the editor’s note in the Glory to God Hymnal, it states: “This text by a Presbyterian pastor in California expresses the conviction that being a good steward is an essential part of the Christian life, for self-giving is God’s own nature.”

This harvest hymn talks of how we offer the firstfruits “of the wealth of this good land, of farm and market, shop and home, of mind and heart and hand.” It concludes with a theological statement: “O God who gave yourself to us, in Jesus Christ your Son, help us to give ourselves each day until life’s work is done.”

Prayer

Generous God, if we only pause for a moment to think of all that you have poured into our lives, gratitude and generosity will flow out as a response. Thank you for blessing us to be a blessing. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.
