HYMN 651: I WAITED PATIENTLY FOR GOD

The text of Hymn 651, I Waited Patiently for God, is a paraphrase of Psalm 40 from the Iona Community. The editors of the Glory to God Presbyterians Hymnal note that the 3rd stanza of this song “is a significant testimony to the importance of singing God’s praise.” In following the theme of thanksgiving this psalm/song helps us lift our praise.

I waited patiently for God,
for God to hear my prayer;
and God bent down to where I sank
and listened to me there.

God raised me from a miry pit,
from mud and sinking sand,
and set my feet upon a rock
where I can firmly stand.

And on my lips a song was put,
a new song to the Lord.
Many will marvel, open-eyed,
and put their trust in God.

Great wonders you have done, O Lord,
all purposed for our good.
Unable every one to name,
I bow in gratitude.

Each day, from where we find ourselves sinking under stress, sickness, or sadness, we can thank God for hearing and caring.

Prayer

God, as I survey the situation of my life, I rely on your presence and the great wonders you still work for me. Let me wait patiently for what you offer next. Amen.
