HYMN 646: SING OUT MY SOUL

In the world of Christian worship and music, many people speak of Taizé.You “The Taizé Community (in France) comprises around eighty brothers from different church backgrounds – Catholic, Anglican, Protestant – and from nearly thirty countries. By its very existence, it is a “parable of community”: a tangible sign of reconciliation between divided Christians and separated peoples.” (from the Taizé website.)

Hymn 646, Sing Out My Soul, is one of several Taizé songs that appear in the Glory to God Presbyterian Hymnal. The editors of our hymnal note “This canonic chant … is based on the opening phrase of Mary’s song (The Magnificat) when she visited her relative Elizabeth , mother of John the Baptist. (Luke 1:39-56)”

It is a simple and haunting mode of giving thanks.

Sing out, my soul.
Sing out, my soul.
Sing out and glorify the Lord who sets us free.
Sing out, my soul.
Sing out, my soul.
Sing out and glorify the Lord God!

That’s it.
