GOD IS OUR ROCK

Psalm 62:5-8

5 For God alone my soul waits in silence,
    for my hope is from him.
6 He alone is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
7 On God rests my deliverance and my honor;
    my mighty rock, my refuge is in God.

When we think of the word shaky, most of us can identify with that feeling. Whether getting up in front of a crowd and feeling those butterflies in our stomach or the trembling in our hands when signing important papers, shaky is a feeling that we often get when we feel nervous, uncertain, or scared. Our body is responding to the fear we have in our hearts. No matter how confident or prepared we are feeling shaky is a normal feeling when we are facing something uncertain. And, we don’t like this feeling. None of us enjoy feeling shaky and that is why we turn to God for comfort and encouragement.

Jesus as our rock is a metaphor meant to bring comfort and remind us that God is all powerful. Rocks are solid, heavy, and difficult to move or change. They are all around us in nature and often what we build on because of how firm and unmoving they are. In the midst of shaky feelings of uncertainty, we need rocks in our lives to provide stability and refuge and to keep our anxiety and fear in check. How does God serve as a rock in your life?

Prayer

Rock of the ages, in our uncertain and shaky world, God you are our rock and our refuge. You provide a fortress of protection and refuge through all the storms of life. Thank you for being our rock and our redeemer. Amen.
