Six Days of Creation and the Sabbath
1 When God began to create the heavens and the earth, 2 the earth was complete chaos, and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. 3 Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 And God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.
I love looking for the work of the Trinitarian God (Father/Son/Holy Spirit) in the biblical narrative and in my life. And it all starts in Genesis chapter 1, verse 2.
The Hebrew word for spirit is translated here in verse 2 as wind. (The footnote in the NRSV tells us: Or while the spirit of God or while a mighty wind)
Jesus once said that the spirit blows where it will.
I love a good wind. Wind energizes a kite or a sail.
I love a good wind. It is refreshing on a hot/stagnant day.
I love a good wind. It stirs things up.
And in the beginning, a holy wind blew over the chaos, God’s Spirit stirred the formless void, and there was life and creation.
Prayer
Stir my soul, Dear God, and let me rejoice that you created me to be energized and refreshed by your Spirit. Amen.
