Ephesians 1:13-14
13 In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; 14 this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory.
Many organizations have an official seal that represents them. The seal of our Presbyterian Church U.S.A. is a very meaningful one with many different symbols of our faith combined together. An official seal is a mark or image that demonstrates the power of what something is and demonstrates ownership. A lot of thought and energy usually goes into creating such a symbol because it marks something as official.
In this letter to the people of Ephesus, we learn that after we gain knowledge about Jesus and the gospel and have belief that we are “marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit.” The text is telling us that once we know about Jesus and believe in his story that our lives will forever be different. Through the power of the Spirit, we are marked and our world is changed. Once you become a person of faith, it is hard to not have it carry into every part of your life and this is how God’s seals us. As people of faith, we can witness to this truth. Once we believe, our lives and our worldviews are forever different. We are sealed and forever loved. And, this seal should help guide all that we do.
Prayer
God of Love, the power of your story in our lives is transformational. Once we believe, we are forever changed and never the same again. Help us to allow this seal to guide all that we do. In your grace, Amen.
Thank you, Callie. This is a beautiful reminder!
