FAMILY OF GOD

Romans 8:14

14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God.

When I was growing up, I couldn’t wait to be an adult. From the child’s perspective, being an adult appeared that it was fabulous. It felt like adults were able to be free to make their own choices, go where they want, and navigate this world with all the possibilities. When we become adults, the experience that we thought we were in for turns out to be quite different. We become adults and suddenly we are faced with responsibility, rules and the realization of all the problems that adults try to solve day after day. And, then many of us spend our adult days longing to be children again and the carefree nature that we didn’t fully appreciate when we had it.

Another part of being a child is having adults around us that help us make sense of the world. Whether it was a parent, teacher, pastor, or neighbor, the adults that surrounded us when we were younger helped answer our questions, provided reassurance that we would be okay, and gave us those hugs when we needed it. Being a child is about being given a space and time to grow and learn.

Being a child of God gives us a similar experience our whole lives long. We are cared for by a God that nurtures and cares for us. When we make mistakes, we are forgiven and encouraged to learn from our choices. No matter what the experience we know that God is with us helping us to make sense of this at times senseless world. Through the power of the Spirit, we are enriched as children of God and part of God’s endless, loving family.

Prayer

Almighty God, we thank you for being a part of the family of God. You help us to learn from this world, our choices, and always welcome us back with open arms. We thank you for the privilege of being your child. In love, Amen.
