Desire without knowledge is not good, and one who moves too hurriedly misses the way.
Proverbs 19:2
I don’t know if I am using the term in its pure form, but I hear many people talking about “due diligence.” I think it first had to do with the research conducted before a business acquisition or investment. Now this phrase seems to apply to the homework done before making a major decision. In the age in which the Proverbs were written, it was the thing that channeled desire so that we didn’t miss the way.
I can get attracted by lots of desirable things on a daily basis. Owning the newest gadget is alluring. Eating that sugar-filled (or deep-fried) treat has its appeal. Indulging whatever urge is tempting. But what are the long-term consequences?
“One who moves too hurriedly misses the way.” It is advisable to make sure that we look in a knowledgeable fashion at the desire before we leap.
Prayer
Dear God, give me the diligence to consider the consequences before I just follow the passion that presents itself today. Amen.
