CREATED AND LOVED

Psalm 8: 1-4

O Lord, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory above the heavens.
2 Out of the mouths of babes and infants
you have founded a bulwark because of your foes,
to silence the enemy and the avenger.

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
    the moon and the stars that you have established;
what are humans that you are mindful of them,
    mortals[
a] that you care for them?

One of the most amazing things about God is the vastness of God’s reach. Many of us go to nature to think about God’s power and beauty because it is so apparent when we walk outside or see something that is majestic. As a family, when we travel to the mountains, we always try to make time for a hike to either a good waterfall or a vista. When you reach the destination and hear the roar of the waterfall or see out over the mountaintop, it always causes us to pause and it is almost immediate to feel the power of God’s creation in these breathtaking moments.

When you think about how big that the earth is in size and the billions of people and creatures that walk and swim this earth, it is amazing that God has time and space for all of us. When you think about all the moments that you have had in conversation with God or the moments when you have felt God pulling or tugging at your heart, imagine the vastness of God to provide these same loving, caring moments for every person. And, yet, that is how big that our God is. There is not a person on this earth that God does not call into relationship—including you.

Prayer

God of grace, we live in your beautiful creation and are reminded daily of how you made all of us in your image. From the smallest of leaves to the tallest of trees, from the newest of babies to those of us with many years behind us, you have created us all and loved us beyond measure. Thank you for your mindfulness and care of all your creatures, big and small. Please help us to care for those around us in the same tender way. In peace, Amen.

    Rev. Weber,
Thank you for your insight and thoughts on Psalm 8. It is a “go to” scripture for me and I was glad to revisit it. There is an anthem in our library by Tom Fettke: “The Majesty and Glory of Your Name” based on Psalm 8. We sang it years ago. Jeremy has done other Fettke anthems and maybe someday he will drag this out also. If you are interested, there is a You tube version by the Oakwood University Aeolians Choir that moves me every time I hear it.
    Thanks again for Psalm 8.
    Yours in Christ,
    Richard Dobler
