Christmas Lullaby

Ave Maria, Ave Maria
Hear the soft lullaby the angel hosts sing
Ave Maria, Ave Maria
Maiden, and mother of Jesus our King

—Christmas Lullaby by John Rutter

When I was growing up, my Nana was in the choir here at First Pres and I always remember her singing this song during the Christmas season. Whether it was in church services or just when she was doing odds and ends around the house, she was always humming or singing this song. Each year when we get to the Advent season, I listen to this song multiple times. Not only does it remind me of special holiday times with my Nana, but it also reminds me to slow down and remember what the Christmas season is truly about.

John Rutter’s “Christmas Lullaby” is gentle, soft, and full of wonder. The song paints a picture of that first Christmas night with quiet stars, angels singing, shepherds watching, and a baby lying in a simple manger. It’s a reminder that Christmas isn’t about all the lights and hype, it’s about God coming close right where we are.

The lullaby calls us to slow down, to notice the quiet moments, and to lean in to the miracle happening in the ordinary. The words “Ave Maria… hear the soft lullaby” feel like an invitation to just pause, breathe, and worship. Even in the simplicity of a humble stable, God shows up, offering love and hope to everyone.

This Christmas, let’s take a moment to sit in the quiet, listen for His gentle presence, and let our hearts be filled with awe and love, just like the first people to see Him.

Prayer

Jesus, thank you for coming into our world so gently and so tenderly. Help us notice You in the quiet moments this season and give us hearts ready to worship You. Amen.
