Bigger Tables

Romans 11:1-6

I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Do you not know what the scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel? 3 “Lord, they have killed your prophets, they have demolished your altars; I alone am left, and they are seeking my life.” 4 But what is the divine reply to him? “I have kept for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” 5 So, too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. 6 But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works, otherwise grace would no longer be grace.

I’ve tried to find where the phrase originated from and haven’t found the original source, but I have always appreciated the sentiment. It goes something like this, “We need bigger tables and not higher fences.” We tend to be very good at building fences and walls, lots of different methods to keep the other away from us. In some ways, fences and walls are easier to build. They don’t require much of a conversation and they clearly define boundaries and borders by creating a “your side” and “my side” path. To talk with someone and navigate a path together is much more challenging and can take time, energy, and a willingness to be vulnerable, a daunting task for many.

In this text for today Paul is answering the question about what happens to Jews much like himself after God sent Jesus. Paul affirms that he and others of his faith were not cast aside as old news but welcomed to the table to be part of the body of Christ. There is no remnant in God’s world as we are all loved and beloved by God. And, likewise, we are called to love the other as well welcoming all in the name of Christ. This is who we are as Christians. It isn’t an easy path and often goes against our instincts to separate. We have to live our lives like the evening of the last supper, we are welcome at the table. We invite others to the table. We are given hope in tomorrow at the table.

Prayer

God of all good, help us to remember that you call us to the table. You encourage us to see others through your eyes, seeking love and understanding, compassion and hope. Help us to be patient, welcoming and loving to all who cross our paths. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
