BE THE LIGHT

Matthew 5: 14-15

14 “You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. 15 People do not light a lamp and put it under the bushel basket; rather, they put it on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

These words for Jesus are an incredibly empowering reminder of what we are called to be in the world. So often we are taught to not brag about our talents or boast about our contributions. Many of us do prefer to be behind the scenes helpers. And, yet, in this passage Jesus reminds us how important it is to use and show those around us our gifts. To share our light and our gifts is a way to care for others and show our praise and gratitude to God. We all have a variety of gifts such as: the gift of song, a patient ear, energetic spirit, tenacity, or countless other ways.

As we look around at our neighbors and neighborhoods, how can you be a light today? Who in the world needs your light?

Prayer

Dear God, you are the source of all light. Your word and goodness lights our lives and fills us with joy. Help us see the light in our lives and allow us to be beacons of light to one another. In all glory, Amen.
