Be Humble

Matthew 23:1-12

Oh, Lord, it’s hard to be humble when you’re perfect in every way

Oh Lord, it’s hard to be humble I get better looking each day!

(I always sing that little ditty with tongue in cheek.)

“I once was as happy as I could be,

But that was before I learned I was a Pharisee.”

And Jesus was critical of Pharisees!

Jesus said that the rabbis knew a lot about Moses and the scriptures and were good at teaching the people what to do. The problem was that they would say one thing and do another. We know that is not good when your words and your deeds are not in sync!

Pharisees were good at pointing out all the rules to follow but were not good about giving help to the people who needed it. They loved to show off their adorned robes and wanted to be the center of attention at parties. They always wanted the “best seats in the house” wherever they might find themselves. That title may not fit me to a T, but I do recognize attitudes and behaviors that suggest there may be more Pharisee in me than I care to admit. What about you?

Then Jesus said,

Don’t follow their example! God doesn’t want you to show off or try to be the center of attention. God just wants you to be humble and kind and helpful.”

Then Jesus said,

“Learn from me. This is what will make you special!

Prayer

O God, if I look in the mirror and see, hear, or do anything that suggests I am a Pharisee, please point that out to me. Help me to be humble, kind and helpful as is Your Son, Our Savior Jesus. In His name we pray. Amen.
