Luke 13:33-37
33 Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of Jerusalem.’ 34 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! 35 See, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see me until the time comes when you say, ‘Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.’
In His various parables, Jesus uses images and stories to convey lessons about God. This passage is a time of teaching, and it takes something from everyday life to paint a poignant portrait of God.
When I ponder and wonder about the nature of God, I sometimes get caught up in the powerful and grand images. “Almighty” and “Holy” are terms that cross my lips in those conversations. But, in this passage, Jesus settles in on the farm to talk about His (God’s) love and care for us.
I have often desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings.
Wow. My Lord and God is at the same time a majestic eagle and a mamma hen who wants to protect me under her wing.
The wonder of that is amazing!
Prayer
Loving Lord, thank you for gathering me under your care. Amen.
