ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL: ASP

Job 20:12-16

12 “Though wickedness is sweet in their mouth,
though they hide it under their tongues,
13 though they are loath to let it go
and hold it in their mouths,
14 yet their food is turned in their stomachs;
it is the venom of asps within them.
15 They swallow down riches and vomit them up again;
God casts them out of their bellies.
16 They will suck the poison of asps;
the tongue of a viper will kill them.

Deuteronomy 32:28-33

28 They are a nation void of sense;
there is no understanding in them.
29 If they were wise, they would understand this;
they would discern what their end would be.
30 How could one have routed a thousand
and two put a myriad to flight,
unless their Rock had sold them,
the Lord had given them up?
31 Indeed, their rock is not like our Rock;
our enemies are fools.[k
]
32 Their vine comes from the vinestock of Sodom,
from the vineyards of Gomorrah;
their grapes are grapes of poison;
their clusters are bitter;
33 their wine is the poison of serpents,
the cruel venom of asps.

The asp is often mentioned in the Bible as an illustration of wickedness and evil. If we are looking for a simple lesson in our lives, we should beware of poisonous people.

Prayer

God, let me be cautious of those whose words and actions are dangerous; poisonous. And keep me from spewing venom in my words, as I instead follow more faithfully my Lord and Savior Jesus, in whose name I pray. Amen.
