A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY

Luke 13:20-21 (NRSV)

The Parable of the Yeast

20 And again he said, “To what should I compare the kingdom of God? 21 It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.”

When it comes to baking, I don’t have much experience with bread. But I do have a meringue pie story.

My Grandmother Negley was an excellent baker, And her chocolate meringue pies were memorable. In my teenage years, I decided to try my hand at a lemon meringue pie. And, blend as I might, I couldn’t get those egg whites to stiffen and stand. So, I called Grandmother, long distance, and without even being with me in the kitchen she declared “You have a speck of yolk in the whites.” As a not so careful teenage chef, of course I did. Well, even a speck of yolk can ruin a meringue.

And, bread bakers can attest that a little yeast can leaven a whole batch of bread.

Tiny actions and thoughts make a huge difference in cooking, and in our lives of faith. Keep the bad things out of your mind and deeds, and the good things in.

Prayer

Keep, me pure and focused Dear Lord, as I look for the abundant life you promise as I follow my Lord and Savior, Jesus. Amen.
