16 And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw God’s Spirit descending like a dove and alighting on him.
This scripture has some interesting wording. After emerging from the baptismal waters, the heavens were opened to him (Jesus), and he saw God’s Spirit descending like a dove and alighting on him.
Many times in scripture, we are told tales of the presence or work of “the Holy Spirit”.
There’s one reference in Acts to “the Spirit of Jesus.” ( 7 When they had come opposite Mysia, they attempted to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow them; Acts 16:7)
And, here, in Matthew chapter 3, “God’s Spirit” descends like a dove on Jesus at baptism.
God’s Spirit connected Jesus to His Heavenly Father. And God’s Spirit, the Holy Spirit may be the spiritual glue that connects us to our Heavenly Father.
Prayer
God, my Heavenly Father, let Your Spirit alight on me in such a way that just like Your firstborn, Jesus, I may also experience my real connection with You. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
