SEEN NOR HEARD

John 14:17

This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him because he abides with you, and he will be in you.

Over the years, I have had many people out and about share that they have seen signs in their lives. Often times, folks either apologize for sharing them or state a caveat like “I don’t know if you believe in sort of a thing.” As a person of faith, I absolutely do. Those little moments like a song at the right time, or a symbol popping up even on television, or a phone call just when you need it—these are the little glimpses of the Holy Spirit that we are gifted with on an ongoing basis. Some times when life is a bumpy I rely on these signs to help me get through. The hymn “Be Thou My Vision” has always been one of those. We sang it at our wedding and has been used in some family funeral services. In visiting countless churches filling pulpits, I rarely picked the hymns but would always smile when I got the bulletin for Sunday morning and there it was. It has happened a lot and Kevin and I both will text each other when it pops up.

We could take these little moments as a coincidence or chance but our faith tells us that they are more than that. A lot of the world might tell us to disregard these moments and connections, but our faith tells us that these God moments are truly the Spirit at work. Because the Holy Spirit abides in us, we are able to see and hear these signs with the support and comfort that they are intended for us. To dismiss them or give them up to chance is in many ways to deny God’s very presence in our lives. To embrace them and celebrate them is affirming of God at work in the world. Embrace them! Celebrate them! Share them!

Prayer

Holy Spirit, we thank you for your active presence in this world. Thank you for moving and stirring through many signs and moments in our lives reminding us that you are alive and at work in each one of us. In your grace, Amen.
