28 “From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he[f] is near, at the very gates. 30 Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
In this lesson of the fig tree, Jesus reminds us of the beauty and learning that can be found in nature. The natural world around us can most certainly contain signs that remind us of God being in the world. We have all likely had those moments of a good sunset, a new bloom, the smell of jasmine, and the stir of a gentle breeze that remind us that God is alive and well in the world.
Jesus then reminds us that even though some of these moments are temporary and fleeting that God is forever and constant. Moments will pass. Sunsets will fade into the dark night. Breezes will ebb and flow to stillness. Yet, despite these fleeting moments, God is constant through it all and we can take comfort in a temporary world of knowing that God is fixed, permanent and always with us.
Prayer
Creator God, we are grateful for the living world around us and the many ways that we can connect with you through nature. Help us to see you clearly in nature around us and to be reminded of your constant and abiding love. Amen.
