Continuing in the minor prophets, the Old Testament book of Joel is a mystery. Though it lies within the cannon with Hosea and Amos, scholars believe it to be a later book. The first reason is the name ‘Joel’ itself is of Persian origin, meaning “Yahweh is God.” The second is the book mentions the Greeks as a great nation of power that would not have existed yet when Hosea and Amos were written. It is also a mystery to scholars, as it describes harrowing apocalyptic events, which may or may not have occurred, such as agricultural ruin and destruction to the land of Judah. It is distinctive as a prophetic book in that it does not point blame but rather it calls the people to action and to the power of rituals as a people to ask of God’s forgiveness. The sovereign power of God is affirmed and ultimately will prevail.
Joel 2:12-16
“12Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning; 13rend your hearts and not your clothing. Return to the Lord, your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and relents from punishing. 14Who knows whether he will not turn and relent, and leave a blessing behind him, a grain offering and a drink offering for the Lord, your God? 15Blow the trumpet in Zion; sanctify a fast; call a solemn assembly; 16gather the people.”
