PROVERBS

In its first six verses, the biblical book of Proverbs claims to contain the wisdom a young person might wish to master in order to cope with life.

Proverbs 1:1-6

The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

For learning about wisdom and instruction,
    for understanding words of insight,
for gaining instruction in wise dealing,
    righteousness, justice, and equity;
to teach shrewdness to the simple,
    knowledge and prudence to the young—
let the wise, too, hear and gain in learning
    and the discerning acquire skill,
to understand a proverb and a figure,
    the words of the wise and their riddles.

The entire book is composed of several collections of wisdom sayings. We are treated to the proverbs of Solomon, the words of the wise, and the words Agur, the words of Lemuel, and a famous acrostic poem on “the good wife.”

No matter our station in life, delving into these wise words can help understand and live our lives.

Prayer
