This African-American Spiritual, first recorded in the 1920’s, seems to have originated somewhere in the Southern United States. It enjoyed renewed popularity during the folk revival of the 1960’s and became a standard campfire song, eventually traveling throughout the world.
Kum ba Yah means “Come by Here” and thus is an invitation for Jesus to join us in a variety of situations and to offer comfort and support to any in need.
