Devotional Thoughts Based on the Glory to God Hymnal
Matthew 18:20
For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.
What comes to your mind when I say this phrase: Kum Ba Yah?
- Cedarkirk or Montreat
- Campfire
- Singing
- S’mores
- Guitar
- Moonlight
- Star studded skies
- Closing song of the camp or retreat
- Improvisation of lyrics: laughing, dancing, reading
- Sharing a blanket
Yes, no doubt this hymn conjures up many memories. The Glory to God commentator has written:
This African-American Spiritual, first recorded in the 1920’s, seems to have originated somewhere in the Southern United States. It enjoyed renewed popularity during the folk revival of the 1960’s and became a standard campfire song, eventually traveling throughout the world.
Kum ba Yah means “Come by Here” and thus is an invitation for Jesus to join us in a variety of situations and to offer comfort and support to any in need.
Prayer
Ever present Lord, we are thankful You are always with us though we be alone or few in number. Thanks for caring for us and sharing life with us. Amen.
